Zuri Ruiz teaches Yoga in Jersey City.

“For many Indigenous peoples, including the Taíno people of Borikén (where I am from), the Sun represents life. The Sun has long been recognized as a mighty god who delivers strength and longevity to the people and Earth.

In Yogic context, otherwise known as ancient wisdom developed over thousands of years by the Indigenous people of the Indian subcontinent, the Sun provides life, intelligence, and consciousness.

For this reason, I’ve named this space, Sol Mind Moves.”

Welcome! My name is Zurishaddai (zur-ish-uh-dye) [she/they] and I’m the creator of Sol Mind Moves.

Without having known its true name, mindfulness has been a practice in my life since childhood. Prayer and meditation practices were deeply influenced by my father’s encouraging stories of our Taíno ancestors in Borikén (Puerto Rico, where I am from) and my mother’s spiritual guidance through Bible study.

In the face of trauma, I drifted away from mindfulness and joy. In search of healing, in 2013, I met the practice of Yoga and it transformed my life.

Pranayama, the practice of breath control, became particularly significant for me. As I learned to manage my breath, I began to cultivate a calmer mind.

Learning to practice asana (yoga postures) with intention and discipline further nourished my body and spirit, reshaping my habits, decision-making, and Self-relationship in profound ways.

In 2015, I completed my Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Certification, CYT-200, led by FlorYoga of Jersey City, New Jersey.

In 2018, following a wrist fracture from snowboarding fall, I regained mobility through physical therapy and was inspired to train with Functional Anatomy Seminars, earning my certification as a Certified Mobility Specialist, FRCms.

Connecting my love for both mobility training and yoga asana, I continually study with Cecily Milne of Yoga Detour™ since 2017; a Registered Yoga Detour™ Instructor, RYDI, since 2021.

Additionally, I have guided pregnant people in wellness & yoga asana since 2015, trained in Prenatal Yoga by birth educators and doulas; Michelle Timek, Kimberleigh Weiss-Lewitt, and May Lane.

With your support, I aim to expand this platform and foster a welcoming space for a variety of practitioners and teachers. Thank you for being here!
